After a half day journey from the east coast to the west via the island taxi, an island shuttle and then the lodge's van, we finally arrived at our destination -- Chaa Creek. This place is magical. I feel like I have landed in the world of the eowks (sp?).
This eco-friendly lodge perfectly blends in with the natural surroundings of lush green vegetation. Our room includes an indoor and out door shower, hamocks for our porch, and minimal lighting to encourage the use of natual lighting and sleeping when it is dark. We don't have room keys -- as people don't steal here. (There is a safe though for our cash and passports just in case.)
The individual huts and villas are nestled into the rolling hillside and at night a candlelit pathway guides you as you explore. The seating area for the bar includes hand carved wooden chairs and tables -- each unique, just like the trees with which they blend.
As night falls, creatures of the night awake. I hear unusual sounds, and wonder what may lurking around the corner.
The seven course meal was elegantly created with natual, and local whenever possible, ingredients. Tonight's fresh baked bread was Mexican, tomorrow it will be another interesting creation.
Like everything else thus far on this trip, my expectations have been exceeded -- let's see if that trend continues tomorrow when we visit Guatemala's ancient mayan ruins -- Tikal. Ever since visiting Guatemala in 2000 I have been dying to explore this fallen city. I cannot wait for tomorrow.
