Walking along Ambergris from El Pescador, I was blown away by the number of real estate developements that were abandoned or slowly being constructed.
I knew we were visiting Belize during the low season, as the hurricane season technically starts June 1. However, paradise certainly couldn't be this vacant--even during the low season, could it?
When asking the locals if there are less tourists than normal this time of year, they all replied, "yes".
It makes sense that people are saving more now, trying to pay off credit card bills, and such. So many people were living beyond their means, that it was bound to catch up with them at some point.
I just hate that fiscal irresposibility of others touches people worlds away.
Hopefully things will turn around soon. These people need it.
