4th of July -- in Small Town U.S.A.

The 4th of July has always been one of my favorite holidays. I remember spending the day on the beach followed by watching fireworks over the Florida Gulf. I reflect and remind myself why I'm proud to be an American -- the reasons I tend to take for granted during the hustle and bustle of modern American life.

This 4th was pleasant and simple -- the way it should be. A friend and I decided to spend it in Ellijay, Ga. After hiking for a few hours at Fort Mountain State Park (working off the homemade strawberry cake we devoured earlier in the day), we hung out with the locals in downtown Ellijay, enjoying live music followed by a pretty impressive fireworks show. While the fireworks weren't as elaborate as those in downtown Atlanta, the wholesome simplicity of the evening resonated with me at this point in my life. I was reminded of my childhood dreams and fond memories--that which holds true meaning in my life.

It is so easy to get caught up in the rat race. I'm glad we experienced an authentic and down to earth 4th of July. Especially since it reminded me of why I'm proud to be an American. Boy, am I happy to call the U.S. home.
