I knew I would love gorilla trekking, but I had no idea I'd fall in love with Africa too.
When flying to Rwanda a few days ago, Rosie and I talked about where else in Africa we'd like to visit at some point in our lives. My list only included two places--South Africa and Zanzibar (I'm dying to dive there!). The list is now significantly longer.
The trip thus far has included:
- Sept. 20: arrived in Kigali, visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial, headed to our lodging (the Gorillas Nest) in Kinigi which is where ORTPN is located
- Sept. 21: trekked the golden monkeys, met with the director for the DFGFI's Karisoke Research Center, visited the gorilla orphanage, saw an Intore dance
- Sept. 22: trekked to see the Amarhoro ('peace') group which is led by Ubumwe ('unity'), dropped off school supplies at a local school and briefly visited with students and staff, purchased some beautiful fabrics in a local market, visited a produce market, had a great conversation re: local customs while enjoying igisafuria and chapatti
- Sept. 22: trekked to see Susa group which is the largest of the habituated groups, visited the Karisoke Research Center
- Sept. 23: travelled to Akagera National Park which is located in the eastern park of Rwanda, right next to Tanzania
- tomorrow: going on safari!!!
Details + photos coming soon ;)
